, a pioneering biochar developer operating in emerging markets.  

This marks Terraset’s first biochar pre-purchase

, after moving millions of dollars into carbon dioxide removal (CDR) across a range of methodologies. The choice reflects growing confidence in the climate impact and co-benefits of biochar, as well as the strength of Grain’s ecosystem approach: connecting verified projects, trusted operators, and mission-aligned capital.  

Pyrogen uses advanced pyrolysis systems to transform waste biomass –including invasive species in Kenya- into high-quality biochar, which is then applied in sustainable concrete mixes. This process enables verified, long-term carbon sequestration with strong co-benefits: waste reduction and more sustainable building materials. In 2024, Pyrogen received a utility model from the Kenya Industrial Property Institute, granting exclusive rights to use biochar as a concrete admixture.   

Today, Pyrogen is collaborating with international development partners and property developers to deploy its carbon-negative concrete in affordable housing projects. This approach not only reduces the carbon footprint of high-density built environments in Africa, but also demonstrates the potential of carbon markets to subsidize the cost of the world’s most widely used construction material for the benefit of end users where price sensitivity is critical to driving capital investment.
